University of Michigan LEAD Scholarship

After the 2006 passage of Proposal 2 in the state of Michigan, many factors could no longer be considered in the admissions process. The following fall saw one of the least diverse freshman classes enrolling on the Ann Arbor campus in recent history. Private scholarship support for diversity was also significantly affected by Proposal 2 because the University could no longer accept donations for race or gender specific programs.

For these reasons, the Alumni Association established the LEAD Scholars Program to support the traditions of leadership, excellence, achievement and diversity of the University. This is a merit based scholarship available to accepted students to help the best and brightest make their way to Michigan. The Alumni Association—not the University—takes full financial and administrative responsibility for this scholarship program.

Part of what has made the University of Michigan such a deeply rich experience is its diverse student body. The coming together of different people, from different places, with different mindsets benefits all students. Thanks to our donors, we’re proud to be able to contribute to an inclusive campus by offering LEAD Scholarships to select admitted students. Those who embody Leadership, Excellence, Achievement, and Diversity. These are the minds who will shape our student body, our campus and, eventually, our world.
