INTERNATIONAL FUNDING OPTIONS

Many countries provide loans or scholarships specific to their citizens. Michigan Ross admitted candidates and current students can review a list of funding options for international students.  As we become aware of additional programs, we will update this document. The University of Michigan does not endorse any specific program.

FEDERAL AID FOR GRADUATE INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Federal regulations and University of Michigan policy severely limit the types of U.S. Federal financial assistance available to international students. Specifically, international students with F-1, F-2, J-1, J-2; and G series visas are not eligible for federal student aid.

Non-U.S. citizens may qualify for student financial aid programs if they are one of the following:

• A U.S. permanent resident with an Alien Registration Receipt Card (I-151, I-551, or I-551C)
  • If you have only a Notice of Approval to Apply for Permanent Residence (I-171 or I-464), you are not eligible for federal student aid.
• A U.S. national (includes natives of American Samoa or Swain’s Island)
• An eligible non-citizen with an Arrival-Departure Record (I-94) from the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service showing one or more of the following designations:
  • Refugee
  • Asylum Granted
  • Indefinite Parole and/or Humanitarian Parole
  • Cuban-Haitian Entrant, Status Pending
  • Conditional Entrant (valid only if issued before April 1, 1980)

NOTE:  Citizens of the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau are eligible only for Federal Work-Study.

If you meet the above criteria, you may qualify for federal assistance.

PRIVATE EDUCATIONAL LOANS

• The University of Michigan provides information for several Private Lender options. Note that these will require a U.S. citizen or permanent resident co-signer. For help comparing loan options, see the University of Michigan FinAid website loan analyzer.
• The Ross School of Business-University of Michigan Credit Union (RSB-UMCU) loan is no longer available effective March 1, 2013.
