How do I select a member to apply for an NHS scholarship?

Advisers may allow any senior member of the chapter to apply for the scholarship. (In an effort to support increased college access for students, the previous limits placed on the number of applications per chapter based on graduating class size have been removed.)

With regard to financial need as a consideration, does my school have to participate in the National School Lunch Program in order to determine eligibility of need?

No. Any NHS senior member, in good standing, can apply for the NHS Scholarship Program. Those students who report financial need would do so based on their eligibility to participate in the National School Lunch Program.

The inclusion of need is not exclusionary. If a student does not demonstrate financial need, he/she is still eligible to apply for, and possibly be awarded, a scholarship.

Do my students have to receive free or reduced-price lunch in order to apply for the scholarship?

Students do not have to be participating in the National School Lunch Program, but they must meet the income eligibility requirements if they indicate eligibility on their application. The response to eligibility is optional, it is not required. It is important to note that scholarship selection is based on the four pillars of NHS—scholarship, service, leadership, and character—and financial need is also a consideration.

Please remember that any of your NHS senior members can apply, if they choose.

Who can I contact at the national office with general questions about the NHS Scholarship Program?

How can I apply for an NHS Scholarship?

NHS seniors in good standing of an active chapter are eligible to apply. The phrase “seniors in good standing” is generally taken to mean members of the current graduating class (12th graders) who are continuing to meet the standards by which they were selected for membership and who are up-to-date on their chapter obligations, but check with your adviser for your local chapter’s policy.

Please note that students are responsible for checking the status of their applications.

When are scholarship winners announced?

Notification letters are mailed to winners and their principals in late May. Chapter advisers are notified via email. Winners are also announced on our Scholarship Program page in June.

Who is eligible for National Honor Society scholarships?

High school seniors who are members in good standing of an affiliated National Honor Society chapter are eligible to apply for the scholarship.

Does my principal have to be a member of NASSP in order for my school to participate in the NHS Scholarship Program?

No, but your school must have an active NHS chapter.

Do NHS Scholarships expire?

Yes. Scholarships expire after 4 years.

Am I required to use my entire award during my freshman year of college?

No, though you will receive the full amount of the award during your freshman year. You and your college or university may decide how much of the amount to apply toward your freshman year.

If I decide to attend a different school than the one provided with my application, whom should I notify?
