Michigan Competitive Scholarship


The Michigan Competitive Scholarship is available to undergraduate students pursuing their first degree. Students must demonstrate both financial need and merit to qualify for the award, as well as achieve a qualifying ACT score prior to entering college.

Award amount

As of 2014-15, the Michigan Competitive Scholarship pays a maximum amount of $676 per academic year. The maximum amount is based on full-time enrollment and is prorated if you enroll less than full-time. The award may only be used to pay for tuition and other mandatory fees.

It is the responsibility of our office to coordinate all sources of aid for which you may be eligible. All of your financial aid must fit within your budget. If we become aware of additional aid that you have received, we may be required to reduce or cancel this award.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for the Michigan Competitive Scholarship, you must:

  • File the FAFSA by March 1st.
  • Demonstrate financial need as determined by the results of your FAFSA
  • Provide your Social Security number to SSG by phone (1-888-4-GRANTS) by fall of your senior year in high school.
  • Achieve a qualifying score on the ACT prior to entering college.
  • Possess a high school diploma, certificate of completion, or general educational development (GED) certificate.
  • Be enrolled at least half-time.
  • Be a Michigan resident since July 1 of the previous calendar year.
  • Meet the institution’s Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policy.
  • Not be in default on a federal or state student loan.
  • Not be incarcerated.

Program eligibility ends when a student has received a baccalaureate degree, after completing the equivalent of ten (10) semesters or 15 terms, or when a student has been out of high school over ten years, whichever occurs first.

Renewal requirements

For the award to be renewed, the student must continue to meet all of the eligibility requirements listed above and maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0. Future awards are subject to available and approved funding.
