Scholarship Program

Investing in our youth . . . and our future.

Scholarship Application (Click here)

Limited financial resources hamper many National City high school students wanting to attend college.  In the Chamber’s view, the continued strength and vitality of National City depends on a corps of future leaders, many drawn from our community and deeply committed to its future.

Accordingly the Chamber invests annually in a scholarship program for high school students with the aim of empowering students to make a real difference, and providing them with the financial support to realize their dreams.

Scholarships in the amount of $500 or $1,000 are awarded annually, depending on available resources.

Scholarship Requirements

for Sweetwater High School juniors and seniors with an academic GPA of at least 2.9.
for students interested in community development.

To qualify, students must express their commitment to community development in National City through their application.

Background

Community development (CD) can include many activities, from  the guidance of business and elected leaders to the work of community activists and educators.  The aim is always to improve various aspects of local communities that lie beyond the interests of individuals or even individual business entities.  It often means empowering individuals and groups of people by providing these groups with the skills they need to affect change in their own communities.  Community developers work to help communities to improve their positions within the larger social framework.  Before launching his political career, President Barak Obama was involved in community development and organization in Chicago as a young college graduate.

Community Development can be an occupation (such as a community development worker in a local government agency or non-profit agency) or a way of working independently within communities to develop financial or political resources. The goal is always to build communities based on justice, equality and mutual respect.

A number of different approaches to community development can be recognized, including: community economic development (CED); community capacity building; social capital formation; political participatory development; nonviolent direct action; ecologically sustainable development; asset-based community development; faith-based community development; community practice social work; community-based participatory research (CBPR); Community Mobilization; community empowerment; community participation; participatory planning including community-based planning (CBP); community-driven development (CDD); and approaches to funding communities directly.
