Honors Convocation celebrates the achievement of undergraduate students with distinguished academic records. Students who earn one or more of the following award designations will be recognized at this event:

James B. Angell Scholar

Students who achieve an “A” record (all grades of A+, A, or A-) for two or more consecutive terms are recognized as James B. Angell Scholars. The student must have taken a minimum of 14 credit hours each term, including at least 12 credits elected on a graded (A-E) basis. Recipients of this award are recognized during Honors Convocation according to the number of consecutive terms they have earned the Angell Scholar designation.

If a student earns all A’s in a non-qualifying term, it will be ignored in the consecutive term count, but it will not break the Angell sequence. If the student receives a grade other than A+, A, A-, CR, P, S, W, or Y (regardless of the number of credit hours elected), the consecutive term sequence is broken.

Angell Scholars with two consecutive terms are seated in the auditorium with their families. During the convocation, the provost will ask two-term scholars to stand for recognition. Awards are not presented at the ceremony; however the award designation will appear on the student’s transcript on the day of the Honors Convocation.

Angell Scholars with three, four, five, or six consecutive terms are seated together as a group in a reserved section of the auditorium. During the convocation, they will be escorted on stage where they will be congratulated by the president and provost. Photos will be taken of each student as they process across the stage and a digital proof will be sent to the student following the event. Awards are not presented at the ceremony; however the award designation will appear on the student’s transcript on the day of the Honors Convocation.

Angell Scholars with seven or more consecutive terms are seated on stage during the convocation. During the convocation, they will be recognized individually by name and presented with an award. The award designation will appear on the student’s transcript on the day of the Honors Convocation. In addition, these students are invited to attend a pre-convocation luncheon with President Schlissel.

The names of all James B. Angell Scholars will appear in the Honors Convocation printed program.

University Honors

The University Honors designation is awarded to students who earned a 3.5 grade point average or higher during a term. The student must have taken a minimum of 14 credit hours during the term, including at least 12 credits elected on a graded (A-E) basis. Students who achieve University Honors designation for both the winter 2016 term and fall 2016 term are recognized at Honors Convocation. Seniors who achieve University Honors for at least one of these two terms are recognized at the Honors Convocation.

University Honors students are seated in the auditorium with their families. During the convocation, the provost will ask them to stand, along with their dean and other honor students from their school or college, for recognition. Awards are not presented at the ceremony; however the award designation will appear on the student’s transcript.

The names of all University Honors students will appear in the Honors Convocation printed program.
